How To Make Salvia Divinorum Extract

If you have ever smoked a Salvia leaf by itself, you already know that it produces somewhat of a mild calming effect. Of course, you have the option of just chewing the leaf, which can give you a potent trip, but the taste really leaves something to be desired. So, why not take the time to learn how to turn those dry leave into a truly powerful extract?

What Is Needed For This Process

Unfortunately, turning those dry leaves into powerful extract won’t be that simple and it is going to require some chemistry and kitchen equipment. Before you begin the process you are going to have to acquire the items below.

First, you will need 100 grams of high quality Salvia Divinorum and you really want it in larger pieces or big leaves, as this will produce better results. You will also need to acquire several different coffee filters of the same size, which should be easy enough to acquire.

A coffee grinder will also be necessary for the process. You are also going to need one large container or bowl that will be used for mixing purposes. While a strainer will be acceptable, cheesecloth is more preferable for this application.

Distilled water is also necessary for the process and you are going to need four liters of it. Make sure that the water is cool, but not extremely cold, as this won’t produce desired results.

You will also need access to a large, glass-baking dish. One that is 20 x 30 centimeters should be suitable to complete this project. Two glass mason jars and one wire strainer will also be needed to make the extract. The wire strainer must be 15 centimeters in size, so the coffee filters will fit suitably.

Always make sure that you avoid plastic strainers, as they will not work for this process. You are also going to need another small, glass dish. This dish will be used for evaporation purposes.

One that is 13 centimeters in diameter by 8 centimeters in height will be acceptable.

You will also need to purchase two liters of acetone, but you want to make sure that you avoid any acetone product that is labeled extra strength. This will be too strong for your application and it will ruin the entire project. You want the acetone to evaporate rather quickly without leaving any residue on the glass surface and this is something that extra strength will not do.

First Step – involves preparing the leaves for the process. Grinding the leaves into very fine form can be done utilizing a coffee grinder. The grinding process will only require a few minutes of your time, but be sure to monitor your process carefully.

Second Step – involves soaking the ground salvia leaves in water. Now, tap will not work for this process, so be sure to only utilize distilled water, which is of the purest form. Make sure the ground leaves are fully submerged in the distilled water for at least seven minutes.

Third Step – involves separating the soaked leaves from the liquid, which contains at least 12 grams of resins. To separate the two, you will need a metal handheld strainer or cheesecloth. Place the strainer in a clean container or spread the cheesecloth across the top of the container. Gently pour the liquid into the strainer, allowing the water with resins to fall into the container. The soaked leaves will be final product that you need to focus on.

Fourth Step – involves drying out the leaves. This process will require a conventional oven and an oven-safe baking dish, preferably made of glass. Preheat your oven to 100 degrees Celsius or 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the leaves in the baking dish and place it in the oven. Monitoring the progress of the heating method will ensure the leaves are completely dried out.

This process will take anywhere from six to 10 hours, depending on how many leaves you are drying out. To ensure complete dryness, be sure to turn and fluff the leaves every two hours. Remove from the oven and allow cooling to room temperature.

Fifth Step – involves selecting a desirable concentrate. For example to achieve a 5x concentration, 20 grams of leaf is required. Ten grams of leaf is required for 10x concentration and five grams for 20x concentrate. Measure out the leaves and move on the next step.

Sixth Step – involves grinding the dried leaves to a powdery consistency. Pull out your coffee grinder and place the dried leaves in the grinding chamber. Grind the leaves until you achieve a find powdery mixture. This process should only take a few minutes, but do not rush the process, because the end result will be determined by the fineness of the powder.

Seventh Step – involves soaking the powder in acetone. Place the powder in a glass container, seal it tightly and allow to sit for up to 24 hours. Avoid utilizing plastic containers because the acetone will damage them. Stir frequently with a large spoon or metal stirring stick.

Eighth Step – involves separating the powdery leaves from the liquid solution. This process should be completed utilizing a coffee filter to ensure all of the powder is captured. Ninth Step – Now, place you leaf back into the very first jar and add a bit more acetone. After this, go ahead and repeat the straining process again. Give the process 24 hours to acclimate and add the strained liquid from the second mixture to the first mixture.

Tenth Step – When you reach this point you want to utilize that acetone solution that you made. You are just simply going to pour it into your glass-baking dish. After going this, you will need to wait until the solution evaporates down to 250ml

Eleventh Step – Do you remember that ten or twenty grams of crushed leaf that you set aside two days ago in step five? Now, this is when you are going to utilize that crushed leaf. Simply add it to your evaporating dish with the remaining acetone that you have left over from the baking dish.

Twelfth Step – At this point you want to make sure that the acetone has evaporated to the point where there is absolutely no visible liquid left on the leaf. However, if the leaf is a little moist it is perfectly fine, you just want to make sure that there is no visible liquid on the leaf.

When you have reached this point, go ahead and apply a few tablespoons of acetone, while using the leaf to clean any resin that has accumulated around and on the sides of your dish.

Last Step – While the last couple spoons of acetone are evaporating, you want to make sure that you are stirring your project as often and as soon as possible. The reason you want to do this is, because it will stop more resin from accumulating in the work area.

Once the concentrate is dry it will be ready for application. However, before proceeding you want to make sure that all the acetone is completely evaporated from the concentrate, so it is best to let your extract sit for at least one or two days before smoking it up.
